The sneakergame is not for the faint hearted. It’s a fierce business with growing competitors and 'round the clock demands. But on the other side of its rigorous nature, is the awesome vibes that only shoes can bring. That’s what Martin Sultan of Pumped Up Kicks aims to bring back.
Found on the upper deck of a resto bar, PUK serves as a getaway for those who want to hang out with like-minded sneaker enthusiasts. With a pool table on side and a sneaker arcade of heats set up on the other, the shop brings back the fun and camaraderie of the sneakergame. But that’s not all..
Time to get pumped up with kicks and hear it from the man himself!
How did Pumped Up Kicks come about?
I’m a huge basketball fan and I guess my appreciation for shoes came from that. I also had a bunch of sneaker collector friends who inspired me into the game. Eventually, my passion grew to a point of where I thought of entering the sneaker business. The possibility of earning money while collecting shoes was enticing but I was also aware the amount of time and dedication needed. I took the chance and learned the ropes slowly until one opportunity opened to another. I started out online with all my shoes piling in my small condo, the business grew gradually, but it was when my good friend, who’s the marketing chief of Fisher Mall, offered me a place with them, that I was able to go all out with Pumped Up Kicks. Now we’ve moved to our second location, a much bigger space in Fisher Mall.
What makes Pumped Up Kicks different from other sneaker shops?
Pumped Up Kicks for me has always been my passion project. In a way, it's my go to place to chill; and I wanted that for everyone, my team, my friends, partners and of course my customers. Besides sneakers, I made the place spacious with added entertainment, like a pool table that anyone can use, a sneaker arcade with really strong pairs that you can win for just P50 in really cool way.
To get to Pumped Up Kicks, you’ll have to go upstairs from Sugar Ray's Sports Resto Bar. Once upstairs you’ll find an open space with a sneaker wall, a merchandise rack, and a vape counter. You’ll also find Empire Tattoo PH stationed right inside the store.
So you can literally grab a drink, check out some kicks, get inked and have fun all at the same time. It’s literally a one stop shop with a whole different feel.
I’m a huge supporter for local brands and those starting out with their own business. I’ve been there, so we’re open to with consigners for shoes, apparel, accessories and anything related to kicks and tattoos.
What are the highs and lows of the business?
Lows: There are so many sneaker releases now a day. It makes it hard to decide which of them are worth it.
Highs: It’s a great avenue to build networks and to meet new friends.
You’re the first to do the sneaker arcade here in the Philippines, about how many people have won from it so far? What’s the biggest prize that was won?
We had a lot of winners since we started it years back. But for the past year, I would say about 7 winners. Three of the winners came all the way from Pampanga. We had some who was able to snag our Yeezy 750 Chocolate and the adidas NMD R1 Cyan.
Can you share some wild stories people have done to win in your sneaker arcade – and did it work?
The sneaker arcade is dead fun, for both the player and those watching. We have tons of insane stories. I’ve met people who’ve traveled pretty far just to give it try. Many came back several times to play. Some hoarded tickets so they can play all in one go. There are also those who just had beginners luck. The most interesting technique I’ve seen are those who’ve tried it as a team. There was one who used a laser pointer on their targeted shoe while his companion did the maneuvering. The best so far is a group of engineer students who used a full scale ruler.
Did they win? You just have to try it yourself. :)
Sneakerfest 2016 was a success, any plans for another one for this year?
There is something in the works at the moment. All I can share for now is that it’ll happen this November. So for anyone who would like to reserve a spot, feel free to message us.
